Ways To Repair A Broken Stained Glass Window
Much like every other window, stained glass windows are fragile and can occasionally break due to things like wear and tear or harsh weather. However,if your window breaks, don’t panic too much because, with a few small steps, it can be as good as new. Our Sherriff specialist team is experts at repairing windows, so in this blog we’ll share some of the best ways to complete a stained glass restoration.
1. Resolder the Stained Glass Lead
If your stained glass is broken and the outline of the image in the glass has become damaged, it requires the lead of the window to be soldered. Soldering the lead of the window requires minimal tools can be done quickly. When carrying out this stained glass repair it’s important to make sure there is a good union between the solder and lead as you don’t want the lead to melt completely.
Once you have restored the window lead be careful to keep it still as you don’t want to spread the solder everywhere. Then, check that you’ve soldered all the joints, clean up,and then carefully turn the stained glass panel over. After being resoldered, your window should look back to normal!
2. Reattach the Frame
Sometimes it is not just the window that needs fixing, but the frame too. If this is the case, then the task at hand will be to reattach the frame. The frame can be restored in a similar way to how the lead of the stained glass window is repaired. The frame of the window will most likely be zinc, which can be slightly more difficult to solder than lead as it takes more time.
However, by using the process used to fix the stained glass panel leading, you can solder and reattach the frame. When done correctly, you’ll have a window with a sturdy frame that will stand the test of time and prove extra protection for your window.
3. Use Repair Glue
For minor cracks, you can use an adhesive to patch it back together. However, different cracks require different glues and techniques. If your stained glass window has a hairline crack, make sure to firstly, clean up and line up the pieces to have a seamless repair. To complete this stained glass repair, pour the glass repair glue over the crack to cover it. When the glue has dried, it will leave an invisible line where the crack was.
For an open crack on a stained glass panel, it’s best to use epoxy or clear silicone. When completing this stained glass restoration, make sure you are careful when sealing and flattening the holes. To ensure an invisible repair, you can use a sharp blade to gently scrape any excess glue from the stained glass window.
